Council Finance News
The Conquistador Council, BSA, is an IRS 501(c)3 tax-exempt’ not-for-profit agency providing a comprehensive youth development program. Granted a charter by the Boy Scouts of America, the council is included in an IRS group exemption.
The 2010 annual operating budget of the council is $828,250.
Friends of Scouting, the annual fund drive, provide a significant portion of funds to provide the direct program service of the council.
The United Way supports the council programs and services in the seven county area.
Scout store sales, product sales, special fundraising events, interest, camp and activity fees, are the other major sources of funds.
Of note is the fact that the Scout store sales do not cover the cost of maintaining inventory, providing heat and lights, and a store manager.
Also of note is the fact that the council’s share of the product sale is far less than the amount retained by the units.
The major expense areas include providing a council staff (9 employees) who work with over 700 volunteer leaders; operation expenses (building maintenance, utilities, postage, printing, equipment), program supplies, conferences, field service expense, and insurance for liability, property, and camper medical and sickness.
